Demographic situation

According to the data of 2008, about 268,8 thousand people live in Petrozavodsk. The population of the city has been constantly growing due to a large number of people migrating to the capital of Karelia from other cities and districts of the republic.

According to the all-Russian census of 2002, the following nationalities inhabit the city:

• Russians — 81,8%;
• Karelians — 5,1%;
• Finns — 2,8%;
• Belorussians — 2,7%;
• Ukrainians — 2,3%;
• Veps — 1%;
• Other nationalities — 4,3%.
