Health care system of Petrozavodsk shows progress and efficacy. The strong point of Petrozavodsk health care system is the use of the opportunities of information technologies.Computerization covers not only the sphere of diagnostics and treatment but also facilitation of people’s access to services. New equipment, including computers, is being installed at many health institutions of the city for computerizing paperwork of medical personnel. Thanks to the introduction of computer technologies signing up for doctor’s appointments has become more convenient, and emergency department is successfully using automated system for receiving and processing people’s calls.

The key health facilities located in Petrozavodsk municipal district are Republican Hospital named after V. A. Baranov, City Emergency Hospital, maternity home No. 1 named after K. A. Gutkin, Republican Perinatal Center and polyclinics.

Republican Hospital named after V. A. Baranov

Republican Hospital named after V. A. Baranov was founded in 1951 and bears the name of the first hospital chief executive. The hospital includes the following: 17 specialized clinical departments, 20 diagnostic and 15 auxiliary departments.

Specialists of the clinic treatment and prevent all human ailments. The hospital runs Department of Hemodialysis (Artificial Kidney), which meets the highest international standards. Heart Center has been put into operation where such surgeries are made as coronary arterial bypass graft; Hematological Department practices the technique of autologous peripheral hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation against hematological disorders and multiocular sclerosis. One of the core areas of activities at the Republican Hospital is telemedicine technology allowing doctors from provincial hospitals to get medical advice from specialists without referring patients to Petrozavodsk.

City Emergency Hospital

Municipal facility City Emergency Hospital was founded in 1785 by the first Governor of Olonets province G. R. Derzhavin. Today the hospital is one of the largest medical facilities in Petrozavodsk.

The hospital runs inpatient care departments, emergency and outpatient trauma departments.

Residents of the city can get advice from any specialists, all kinds of instrumental and laboratory medical examination as well as high-quality treatment in in-patient facilities, including the one with endovideosurgery equipment.

New ambulances with modern equipment and new x-ray equipment have been procured in the framework of the National Project called Health. Respiratory therapy office is working and endoscopy and ultrasound investigation department has been established. There is now an opportunity of examining patients with the help of spiral computer tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging scanners. New respiratory and anesthesia equipment has been purchased as well.

The City Emergency Hospital also runs Center of computer tomography. Patients of the CEH, polyclinics of Petrozavodsk Municipal District and Karelian provinces are referred to magnetic resonance image scanning. Every day about 20 patients with osteochondrosis, brain diseases and neck and spine vessel troubles are examined with the help of this equipment.

Interbranch scientific and technical complex (ISTC) Eye Microsurgery named after Academician S. N. Fyodorov, Petrozavodsk satellite of St. Petersburg branch

In 2007, a satellite of ISTC Eye Microsurgery named after S. N. Fyodorov was opened in Petrozavodsk Municipal District. ISTC Eye Microsurgery established by a prominent scholar and eye surgeon academician Svyatoslav Nikolaevitch Fyodorov over 20 years ago was justly rated as one of the leading ophthalmology centers in the world. The clinic is unique due to high reliability of the treatment and permanent diagnostics and surgery technology enhancement. Right after its opening, over 1000 people got medical advice from eye doctors free of charge. At present the clinic offers services on diagnosing all kinds of eye diseases, laser correction of short sight, far sight and astigmatism, and microsurgery of cataract and glaucoma.
