THE NUMBER OF ENTERPRISES AND ORGANIZATIONS

According to the Statistical Register of enterprises (Statistical Register of «Rosstat»), the number of organizations registered in Petrozavodsk municipality (enterprises including legal entities, their branches, representations and other separate satellites) as of 01.10.2009 made 14735 units. The municipality is home to 64,3% of the total number of the entries of Statistical Register in the Republic of Karelia.

TURNOVER

During 9 months of 2009, the turnover of large and medium-sized enterprises engaged in all types of businesses made 41,6 billion RUR, or 89,9% of the similar period of 2008 (for the republic on the whole this figure made 81,6%). The municipality had the share of 42,8% of the total turnover of large and medium-sized enterprises of the Republic of Karelia.

THE SHIPMENT OF LOCALLY PRODUCED GOODS, WORKS PERFORMED AND SERVICES PROVIDED

During 9 months of 2009, the volume of the shipment of locally produced goods, works performed and services provided by large and medium-sized enterprises of Petrozavodsk municipality was 10,6 billion RUR or 99,9% of the volume for the similar period in 2008 (for the republic on the whole — 74,5%).

Out of the total volume in Petrozavodsk municipality, 6,4 billion RUR (114,6% of the similar time in 2008 and 116,9% for the whole republic) was the share of business E «Production and distribution of electricity, gas and water»; the volume for business D «Processing industries» made 4,2 billion RUR (83,0% compared to the similar period of 2008, and 82,0% for the whole republic).

PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF ELECTRICITY, GAS AND WATER

During 9 months of 2009, the shipment of locally manufactured goods, works performed and services provided by large and medium-sized enterprises of Petrozavodsk municipality within the business «Production and distribution of electricity, gas and water» was 6,4 billion RUR or 114,6% compared to the similar period of 2008 (116,9% for the whole republic). Power generation during 9 months of 2009 in natural figures made 717,9 million kWth (23,1% of the similar period in 2008), and 1426,9 thousand Gcal (85,8%) of heat.

PROCESSING INDUSTRIES

During 9 months of 2009, the volume of shipment of locally manufactured goods, works performed and services provided by large and medium-sized enterprises of Petrozavodsk municipality within the business «Processing industries» made 4,2 billion RUR or 83,0% compared to the similar period in 2008 (82,0% for the whole republic), including the following types of production:

production of machines and equipment — 629,8 million RUR, or 54,9%;

production of food products, including potables — 1672,4 million RUR, or 101,3%;

production of ready made metal goods — 695,4 million RUR, or 79,4%;

pulp-and-paper production, publishing and printing business — 62,2 million RUR, or 84,0%;

production of non-metallic mineral — 23,6 million RUR, or 41,1%;

production of transport means and equipment — 369,5 million RUR, or 71,6%;

etc.

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION

The volume of works done by large and medium-sized enterprises in the framework of «Civil construction» sector during 9 months of 2009 made 2003,2 million RUR, or 72,3% compared to the similar period in 2008 (75,2% for the whole republic). The municipality had the share of 71,8% of the total works in that sector in the republic. During 9 months of that year, the total of 74318,7 square meters of dwelling houses were constructed, what was 70,7% of the yearly value.

CONSUMER MARKET

During 9 months of 2009, the turnover of retail trade among large and medium-sized enterprises in Petrozavodsk municipality made 8,2 billion RUR or 85,9% compared to the similar period in 2008 in comparable prices (90,7% for the whole republic). During the same time, the turnover of catering business among large and medium-sized enterprises of all profiles made 208,8 million RUR, or by 10,9% less (in comparable prices) than during the similar period in 2008.

PAID SERVICES

During 9 months of 2009, the value of paid services provided to the people of the municipality (by large and medium-sized enterprises) made 5,0 billion RUR and increased by 34,3% compared to the similar period of 2008.

The share of different paid services in the total volume: municipal services 31,1%, communication 26,5%, transport 20,4%, education 9,9%, health 4,3%, household services 3,2%, sanatoriums and health promotion 1,2%, housing 0,8%, and cultural facilities 0,6%. They had the total share of 97,8% of the total paid services provided to people by large and medium-sized enterprises during 9 months of 2009. Paid services also incorporated hotels, physical culture, sports, veterinary etc.

SMALL BUSINESS

The profile of small businesses on the territory of Petrozavodsk municipality did not change during the recent years: retail trade and wholesale, catering, and repairs of automobiles and electric appliances covered almost 50%; processing industries and forestry — about 12%, transactions with real estate, rent and services — 13%, construction — 9%, transport and communication — 7%, hotels and restaurants — 5%.

As of 01.10.2009, over 3,7 thousand small enterprises were registered in the municipality. During 9 months, the average number of people employed in small business was about 40 thousand or 30% of working population. According to the forecast, this figure would reach 41 thousand people by the end of 2009. The average monthly pay in small business made over 10,0 thousand RUR.

INVESTMENTS

In recent years, the amount of investments in the main capital was increasing in Petrozavodsk municipality (2006–2008). Thus, in 2008 the amount of the investments in the main capital was about 5,9 billion RUR, what was by 22,9% more compared to 2007.

However, due to the global financial crisis, the amounts of investments in the main capital decreased in 2009 compared to the similar period of 2008. For instance, during the 1 st quarter the amount of investments was 59,6% of the same time in 2008; during 6 months — 64,6%, and during 9 months it was 66,9% (2167,5 million RUR, what was 29,4% of the total amount of investments in the main capital in the republic).

During 9 months of 2009, the share of proprietary resources of the enterprises — being one of the key sources of investments — made 25,6%, whereas during the same period in 2008 this figure was 29%, and for the whole 2008 it totaled to 41%.

The largest amounts were invested in the main capital of the sectors with higher returns and shorter payback time, i. e. transactions with real estate, rent and services (25,2% of the total amount), state management; obligatory social security (17,5%), production and distribution of electricity, gas and water (13,5%), and processing industries (12,5%).

Compared to 9 months of 2008, investments in hotels and restaurants increased (by 2,3 times), processing industries (by 1,7 times), and other municipal, social and personal services (by 4,6%).

FINANCES

During 9 months of 2009, the large and medium-sized enterprises of Petrozavodsk municipality gained 843,0 million RUR of profits, what is by 33,9% less than during the similar period. As of

  1. 10.2009, the positive balanced financial result made 85,9 million RUR. The share of profitable enterprises out of all the companies analyzed made 58,5% (93 enterprises), unprofitable — 41,6% (66 enterprises), and for the similar period of 2008 those were 68,4% and 31,6% respectively.

The main losses occurred at «Processing industries» — 46,7%, and «Production and distribution of electricity, gas and water» — 18,2%.

EMPLOYMENT

The average number of employees (without part-timers) in large and medium-sized enterprises of Petrozavodsk municipality was 77,5 thousand people in January — August 2009 (by 9,0% less than during the similar time in 2008). Distribution of the employees by sectors of economic activities was as follows: education — 13,8 thousand people; transport and communication — 12,7 thousand people, governmental management, security and obligatory social security — 11,6 thousand people, health and social services — 10,6 thousand people, processing industries — 6,0 thousand people, wholesale and retail trade, repairs of automobiles, motorcycles, electrical appliances and personal goods — 4,4 thousand people, transactions with real estate, rent and services — 4,2 thousand people, production and distribution of electricity, gas and water — 3,8 thousand people, municipal and social services — 3,6 thousand people, financial activities — 2,8 thousand people, construction — 2,0 thousand people, hotels and restaurants — 1,0 thousand people, other — 0,8 thousand people. Officially as of 01.10.2009, there were 2565 jobless people in Petrozavodsk municipality (24,5% of the total number of the unemployed in the republic). The unemployment rate was 1,63% of the total work force.

LIVING STANDARDS

The average monthly salary of 1 employee of large and medium-sized enterprises in Petrozavodsk municipality in January — August 2009 made 20666,8 RUR, what was by 10,6% higher than during the similar period of 2008.

As of 01.10.2009, there were 354 employees that had not received their due pay. The amount of outstanding debts in Petrozavodsk municipality was 7713 thousand RUR. Outstanding debt per one employee of the problem enterprises made 21788 RUR.

The consumer price index (inflation rate) in the Republic of Karelia reached 112,2% between September 2009 and September 2008 (for September 2008 — September 2007 the figure was 110,1%).

PROFITABILITY OF THE AREA

During 9 months of 2009, tax revenues of the budget of Petrozavodsk municipality were 1179,8 million RUR (99,9% of the similar period in 2008), and non-tax income of the budget came to 355,5 million RUR (69,1%). The total gains of the municipal budget made 1535,2 million RUR (90,6%).

The key share in the municipal budget revenues belonged to taxes from private people (personal income tax) — 80,5%. Then followed unified tax on imputed income with 11,7%, and the share of land tax was 3,4%. During 9 months of 2009 compared to the similar period in 2008, tax revenues from PIT dropped by 1,7%. The income from leasing property with 38,0% was second to none in non-tax budget revenues; the share of land lease gains made 25,9%. During 9 months of 2009 compared to the similar period in 2008, revenues from property lease increased by 22,9%.
