NUMBER OF ENTERPRISES AND ORGANIZATIONS

According to the Statistical register of enterprises (Statistical Register of Rosstat), the number of organizations registered in Petrozavodsk urban district (enterprises including legal entities and their branches, representations, offices and other individual subdivisions) made 14949 as of 01.01.2010. The district had 64,5% of the total number of units entered in the Statistical Register of Rosstat in the Republic of Karelia.

TURNOVER OF ORGANIZATIONS

In 2009, the turnover of all large and medium-sized organizations totaled to 57,5 billion RUR or 91,9% of 2008 (86,5% for the whole republic). The district got 42,6% of the total turnover of large and medium-sized organizations of the Republic of Karelia.

SHIPMENT OF LOCALLY MANUFACTURED GOODS, OWN WORKS AND SERVICES

In 2009, the volume of locally manufactured goods, works done and services provided by large and medium-sized organizations of Petrozavodsk urban district made 15,2 billion RUR or 103,1% compared to 2008 (81,0% for the whole republic).

Shipments in Petrozavodsk urban district:

  • shipments for the type E activities “Production and distribution of electricity, gas and water” made 9,1 billion RUR (120,3% of 2008; 120,1% for the whole republic);
  • shipments for the type D activities “Processing industries” made 6,0 billion RUR (84,2% of 2008; 84,9% for the whole republic).

PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF ELECTRICITY, GAS AND WATER

In 2009, the volume of shipment of locally manufactured goods, works done and services provided by large and medium-sized organizations of Petrozavodsk urban district for activity type “Production and distribution of electricity, gas and water” made 9,1 billion RUR or 120,3% of 2008 (120,1% for the republic).

Power generation in 2009 was 1089,7 m kWt/h in physical terms (24,6% of 2008), and 2208,5 thousand Gcal of heating energy (92,0%).

PROCESSING INDUSTRIES

In 2009, the volume of shipment of locally manufactured goods, works done and services provided by large and medium-sized organizations of Petrozavodsk urban district for activity type “Processing industries” made 6,0 billion RUR or 84,2% of 2008 (84,9% for the republic), including:

  • production of machines and equipment — 739,2 million RUR or 42,3%;
  • production of food, including beverages — 2169,9 million RUR or 95,5%;
  • production of metal goods — 873,4 million RUR or 72,7%;
  • production of pulp and paper, publishing and polygraph works — 88,8 million RUR or 83,7%;
  • production of non-metallic mineral products — 36,0 million RUR or 51,5%;
  • production of transportation means and equipment — 991,2 million RUR or 128,8%;
  • other production.

CONSTRUCTION

The volume of works done in the sector “Construction” by large and medium-sized enterprises of Petrozavodsk urban district made 2784,4 million RUR in 2009 or 80,8% of 2008 (74,7% for the republic). The district has 72,0% of the total volume of works for this type of activities in the republic. The total volume of housing built in 2009 (including 46 private homes) made 105 407 sq. meters.

CONSUMER MARKET

The turnover of retail sales by large and medium-sized organizations in Petrozavodsk urban district made 11,4 billion RUR in 2009 or 85,9% of 2008 in comparable prices (91,0% for the republic).

The turnover of catering services provided by large and medium-sized enterprises of all profiles made 290,9 million RUR in 2009 or by 14,8% less in comparable prices than in 2008.

PAID SERVICES

The volume of paid services provided to the people of the city (by large and medium-sized enterprises) made 6,6 billion RUR in 2009 and increased by 32,6% in actual prices compared to the similar period of time in 2008.

Communal services have the major share of all paid services (31,5%). Other services: communication (27,1%), transportation (18,7%), education (10,5%), health care (4,3%), household services (3,0%), sanatoriums and health promotion services (1,1%), housing (0,9%), and cultural services (0,7%). Altogether they cover 97,7% of all paid services provided to people by large and medium-sized enterprises of the district. Paid services also include hotels, sports, veterinary etc.

SMALL BUSINESS

The profile of small business on the territory of Petrozavodsk urban district has not changed during the recent years: retail and wholesale, catering, repairs of cars and electric appliances cover almost 50%, processing industry and forestry — about 12%, transactions with real estate, rent and services — 13%, construction — 9%, transportation and communication — 7%, hotels and restaurants — 5%.

As of 01.01.2010, the district was home to over 3,7 thousand small businesses and 9,1 thousand private entrepreneurs.

In the course of the year, the average number of people employed in small businesses made about 40 thousand persons or 30% of the employed population of the city.

INVESTMENTS

During the recent times, investments in the main capital of Petrozavodsk urban district were increasing every year (2006–2008). Thus, in 2008 the investments in the main capital made about 5,9 billion RUR, what is by 22,9% more than in 2007. However, due to the global financial crisis the volumes of investments in the main capital were going down in 2009 compared to similar periods of time in 2008. For instance, in the first quarter of 2009, total investments made 59,6% compared to the similar time in 2008; for 6 months they were 64,6%, for 9 months — 66,9% and for the whole 2009 they made 72,8% (4019,9 million RUR, what is 30,4% of the total volume of investments in the main capital for the republic).

Most investments in the main capital were made in machines, equipment, transportation means (40,7%) and buildings (except for dwelling houses) and constructions (39,8%).

By types of economic activities most investments were made in the main capital of production and distribution of electricity, gas and water (13,5%), processing industry (21,0%), transactions with real estate, rent and services (28,9%).

Compared to 2008, the volumes of investments increased for hotels and restaurants (by 3,1 times), other municipal, social and personal services (by 2,2 times) and processing industries (by 3,2%).

FINANCES

During 2009, large and medium-sized enterprises of Petrozavodsk Municipal district gained 1499,5 million RUR of profits, what was by 10,0% less than in 2008. As of 01.01.2010, the positive wound up financial result made 732,4 million RUR. The share of profitable enterprises in the total number of analyzed enterprises made 61,6% (98 enterprises), unprofitable — 38,4% (61 enterprises), and in 2008 the figures made 72,7% and 27,3% respectively. The major share of unprofitable enterprises belonged to “Processing industries” — 50,2% and “Production and distribution of electricity, gas and water” — 12,7%.

EMPLOYMENT

The average number of people employed by large and medium-sized enterprises (without part-timers) of Petrozavodsk was 77,5 thousand persons in January — November 2009 (by 10,8% fewer than in 2008).By types of economic activities the average numbers of employed people were as follows: education — 13,8 thousand; transportation and communication — 12,8 thousand; state management, security and obligatory social security — 11,7 thousand; health and social services — 10,6 thousand; processing industries — 6,0 thousand; whole and retail sales; repairs of cars, motorcycles, electric appliances and personal belongings — 4,4 thousand; transactions with real estate, rent and services — 4,3 thousand; production and distribution of electricity, gas and water — 3,8 thousand; communal and social services — 3,6 thousand; financial activities — 2,8 thousand; construction — 2,0 thousand; hotels and restaurants — 1,0 thousand, other — 0,9 thousand.

The number of officially registered unemployed people in Petrozavodsk was 3648 as of 1.01.2010 (26,0% of all unemployed people in the republic). The unemployed rate made 2,3% of economically active population.

SOCIAL STANDARDS

The average salary of 1 employee of large and medium-sized enterprises of Petrozavodsk was 20937,8 RUR in January — November 2009, what was by 9,8% higher compared to 2008.

As of 01.01.2010 the number of people with arrears in wages was 153/ The sum of outstanding debts was 6899 thousand RUR. The outstanding debt per one employee totaled to 45092 RUR. The consumer price index (inflation rate) in the Republic of Karelia made 110,0% in December 2009 compared to December 2008 (in December 2008 compared to December 2007 it was 112,7%).

PROFITABILITY OF THE TERRITORY

Tax revenues of the budget of Petrozavodsk totaled to 1664,2 million RUR in 2009 (101,5% of 2008); non-tax revenues of the budget made 533,6 million RUR (81,3%). The total revenues of the budget were 2197,8 million RUR (95,7%).

The main share of nues arrived from individual income tax (IIT) — 81,2%; the share of the unified tax on imputed income made 11,2%, and the share of the land tax was 3,4%. In 2009, the revenues from IIT grew by 0,2% compared to 2008.

The main share of non-tax revenues of the budget belonged to renting property — 33,4%, the share of land rent was 24,0%. In 2009, revenues from property rent increased by 17,3% compared to 2008.
